Bare Winter

4 08 2008

Its real!  Kirsty launched her book Bare Winter at Salamanca Arts Centre on Friday evening.

The book has turned out even better than we imagined and is excellent value at $75.  Containing 175 pages of superb photos the book is bound with a padded hardback cover and a silky smooth dust jacket.  At the launch I saw many people picking the book up and sighing just at the feel of it.

Bare Winter is now available in bookstores around Tasmania or may be purchased directly from Kirsty by emailing her at kirsty@barewinter.com

I am very proud of what we have achieved and it has been an exciting chapter in my life to produce my first publication and for it to be a book of such high quality.  Don’t just take it from me though, chase up a copy and see for yourself!

I have just discovered I can turn off the requirement to register with WordPress before leaving comments.  Thanks Ron for letting me know how difficult it is to actually register!  Also tried to make the opening screen of the Fine Art Photos album more self explanatory.

A Big Month!

15 07 2008

2009 Tasmania Calendar

During the past month I have seen my Tasmania 2009 Calendar roll off the presses at Print Applied Technology in Hobart.  What a wonderful experience to be invited to press proof your work as it happens.  The guys at PAT are an incredibly talented and professional bunch.  Its also an incredibly satisfying feeling to see your own work replicated and packaged.

Bare Winter

Over the same period my friend and colleague, Kirsty Pilkington’s book, Bare Winter, was also printed.  The book has now been sent to Melbourne for binding in anticipation of a 1st August launch.  Kirsty’s commitment to her book has been enormous in so many ways.  I can’t help but feel excited for her to see such a big project come to fruition.

We both have a lot of work in front of us as we market and distribute our products.  Not to mention producing more framed prints and keeping up with our existing card orders and printing jobs.

ABC Stateline Interview

In the middle of all this I was invited by ABC TV to do a segment for their Stateline program.

It was a bit daunting and I admit to being quite nervous but once again it was great to see real professionals at work.  Lucy Shannon, the producer and the film crew Scott and Dave were terrific to work with and eventually put me at ease.

Salamanca Market

Meanwhile, another colleague, Mark Cowles, has taken over a stall at Salamanca Market and is selling my work there.  Mark is a talented photographer himself and has great plans for developing his site at the market as a venue for showcasing the work of up and coming photographers.

Commenting on Blogs…

24 05 2008

Some people (probably the ones over 20) are unsure how to comment on this blog.  I’m no expert but I think you need to register as a user at www.wordpress.com first.  I guess this slows the spammers down.  Once you register you can comment on anyone’s WordPress blog.

Hahnemühle Fine Art Digital Paper

21 05 2008

Just a reminder that I am the Tasmanian distributor of Hahnemühle paper. Hahnemühle is unquestionably one of the finest digital fine art printing papers available. It has fantastic archival qualities and is typically mould-made or 100% cotton rag paper with various textures available.

In addition I distribute Ilford and Magiclée photo papers and canvas which are also fine products.

Ilford produces GALERIE Smooth Gloss, Smooth Pearl and Smooth High Gloss.  These papers incorporate cutting edge porous inkjet design, allowing an ‘Instant’ dry effect in both dye and pigment based printers. A new addition to the Ilford range is an economical 250gsm satin photo paper

The Magiclée range includes superb presentation and poster weight papers in gloss, satin or matt. Papers in the Magiclée line include fine art, matte presentation, and fast-drying photobases. Canvas selections range from 100% cotton to poly/cotton canvas blends. All are compatible with the water-based ink and printer systems and most are compatible with longer-lasting pigment ink sets. Magiclée brand media makes it possible to achieve quality results with sheets and rolls, which are available in a variety of sizes.

Email me at ian@straydogphotos for more details on papers.

Surfing photos of Herman Tyssen

20 05 2008

I recently found some shots I took of local surfing legend, Herman, back in the early 80s. The guys at CoastView have posted them on their site at http://www.coastview.com.au/site/surfing/articles/herman_rides_again/
